An aerial view of Hudson Yards in New York City, featuring modern skyscrapers and high-rise buildings, including the tall glass structures of 30 and 10 Hudson Yards. Below, rail yards and construction sites are visible near the Hudson River, with the rest of Manhattan’s skyline in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

In this blog post, Vicky brings together the thoughts and reflections of her fellow design studio members at the Masters of Science, Advanced Urban Design Program with Cornell University. The studio was led by Jae Shin and Damon Rich of the urban design firm HECTOR and included students from the Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture, and Master of Advanced Urban Design programs. She explores their two-week research on Hudson Yards, providing an overview of the project's history and details about each building.

Hudson Yards is a highly debated mixed-use development situated above the West Side Rail yards by the Hudson River. The first phase opened to the public in 2019, with the second phase slated for completion in 2025. Touted as the most expensive real estate venture in the world, at a staggering $25 billion, it has been criticized for isolating itself from Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen and for issues of gentrification and discrimination. Throughout the Studio, we investigated Hudson Yards in comparisons to the ongoing urban design proposals at the similarly situated Sunnyside Yard in Queens, New York.
