Sabertanks is a vibrant, retro-inspired pixel art game that was made for the Gumbo Gamemaker GameJam 2024. It features two players engaged in fast-paced, exciting tank and saber battle with in a cyberpunk setting Battles take place on destructible roofs in this gritty, neon-lit cityscape, complete with police car chases and narrow tank escapes

Each player will have to rely on their strategy, timing, and quick reflexes in order to survive the shifting and precarious terrain, and also find and defeat the other player!

The Game is currently under Alpha testing, and will be updated as time permits.

This game was created in just 48 hours as part of the inaugural Gumbo Gamemaker Game Jam, where I took on the responsibility of assembling the team. We formed a cohesive group consisting of two programmers, a composer, and an artist (myself).

Inspired by 8-bit and 16-bit styles, I focused on vibrant colors and bold outlines to help players easily distinguish tanks, obstacles, and terrain within the game’s intense pace. Drawing from my background in Urban Design and embracing the playful absurdity of the game’s premise, I set the action atop a series of destructible rooftops, giving the game a gritty cyberpunk, street-racing vibe.
It was a challenge to create all the assets of the game within the time allotted to us, as well as instructing the team in order to have the gameplay and the music of the game fit the same aesthetic style set by the visual art.This project was also my first experience working with pixel art, as well as everyone’s first time using the Gamemaker engine. Despite these hurdles, our team received recognition at the presentation ceremony for the art direction and cohesive style, an achievement I am especially proud of.
